Broadband wireless network service provider, Manchester Metronet, has deployed technology from BridgeWave Communications, significantly extending the reach of its metropolitan area network (MAN), and providing enhanced CCTV surveillance capabilities for Manchester City Council and Manchester Greater Police.
Manchester Metronet achieved a return-on-investment in the new technology, in less than six months. Its high-speed wireless Internet services are up to 80% cheaper than traditional service provider offerings, without any compromise in quality or performance.
Manchester City Council recorded network congestion at one of its control centres when a 100 Mbps backhaul link was unable to cope with an increase in traffic following growth in real-time video surveillance activities.
Manchester Metronet installed a GE80 gigabit wireless link from BridgeWave Communications, which operates at 80 GHz, connecting its fibre backbone ring to the council’s control centre.
This proved more than able to support around 200 CCTV cameras on the same link, and ultra low-latency transmission allows real-time pan, tilt and zoom of remote cameras without any time lapse or loss of image quality.
Manchester Metronet subsequently deployed a second GE80 link and four gigabit-upgradeable FE80U links to support a range of bandwidth-intensive applications and remote CCTV monitoring for the city council and the Greater Manchester Police.
