Greece has come out on top for privacy protection and respect for privacy in a survey conducted by Privacy International. The survey, which measured the extent of surveillance and privacy in the EU and the world, placed Greece at the top of the list of EU nations.
Privacy International’s survey scored on Constitutional and Statutory protections, privacy enforcement, ID cards and biometrics, data sharing, visual surveillance, communications interception and retention, government access to data, workplace monitoring and other issues.
Greece has in place a constitutional right to data protection and right to privacy. CCTV was permitted for the Athens Olympics on the condition that they be de-activated after the games.
Romania, Hungary and Slovenia also scored well in the survey.
Privacy International is a human rights group formed in 1990 as a watchdog on surveillance and privacy invasions by governments and corporations.
