Radvision enables surveillance via 3G phone

Story link: Radvision enables surveillance via 3G phone by Lin Freestone

Radvision, a provider of video network infrastructure and Cestel, a software company based in Spain, have together launched an innovative two-way home security and surveillance system.

The system enables a 3G mobile phone user to view their home and converse with anyone in the room via a Wi-fi enabled camera. The system is designed for personal monitoring of children, the elderly, babysitters, household pets etc, rather than for commercial applications.

The product is currently being trialled and is being distributed to 7,000 households in Spain by Securitas Direct, a leading security system distributor.

A user simply dials a number on a 3G phone and is then connected via a regular video call to cameras installed in the home. The system can also be set to call the phone when triggered by a manual or automatic alarm.

The home cameras, which have a built in speaker and microphone, are connected to the security system via a standard ADSL router, and there is therefore no need for a PC on the system.

The user can remotely operate the camera’s pan, tilt and zoom functions and there is also the possibility of controlling an electrical device remotely, such as a door, gate or alarm.

This is ideal for conversing with a visitor at the front door and letting them in remotely via the number pad on the 3G phone.

The video footage can also be recorded for added security.
