Southern Rail installs networked CCTV
Story link: Southern Rail installs networked CCTV by Jan Harris

Dedicated Micros has supplied Southern Rail with an advanced networked CCTV solution.
The equipment provides increased security and safety for passengers on Southern Rail’s South West coast line, which stretches from Bognor Regis to Brighton.
Dedicated Micros has installed its NetVu Connected Digital Sprite 2 DVR (Digital Video Recorder) and NetVu ObserVer video management software.
The project to upgrade Southern Rail’s Outer Area CCTV capabilities began in May 2005 and so far has involved the installation of 40 DS2 DVRs - up to three at each station.
The system is monitored centrally from a Control Room in Hove, East Sussex.
Images are stored locally to each station on the DS2s and can then be viewed on demand over ADSL and WAN (Wide Area Network). They can also be reviewed at the control room in Hove.
NetVu ObserVer’s embedded map facility provides operators with site plans for each station, helping them to manage incidents.
Operators can communicate with people at the station via the public address system, and warn offenders that they are being monitored.
The project is still ongoing and Southern Rail is continuing to roll out the NetVu Connected DS2s across the rail network.
It is also working with Dedicated Micros to add further intelligent video analysis functions such as a ‘left object’ capability.
