CCTV surveillance for Trinidad’s carnival

Story link: CCTV surveillance for Trinidad’s carnival by Lin Freestone

The Trinidad Government and security forces will use closed circuit television for the first time to help police carnival activities during the two-day festival at the beginning of February.

Thousands of visitors from around the world have been drawn to Trinidad and the efforts are being made to ensure that there is no major violence associated with the festive season.

There has been a recent upsurge in criminal activity, including youth gang violence, in Trinidad and Tobago.

The island's Police Commissioner, Trevor Paul speaking at a news conference in Port of Spain, said the new CCTV technology was the first to be used in the country at such a level during this period. The CCTV will be in addition to an airship and scores of police and army officers who will be patrolling the streets.

All ports of entry into the country will be fully protected, including suspected routes for illegal trafficking in arms, ammunition and drugs, as well as human trafficking via the high seas.
