CCTV cameras are to be installed at nine locations in the Merchant City area of Glasgow city centre, at a cost of £300,000.
There is currently just one camera, at Glasgow Cross, in Merchant City, the heart of the Glasgow’s eating, shopping and drinking district.
The new cameras will be located at Paddy’s Market on Shipmarket Lane, Ingram Street, Cochrane Street, High Street, Bell Street, Trongate, Saltmarket and Parnie Street.
The CCTV system is being jointly funded by Glasgow Community and Safety Services, and Scottish Enterprise Glasgow.
The new cameras will be installed in the coming weeks, adding to an existing system of over 300 cameras in Glasgow, which are monitored at a control room in Blochairn.
Although Merchant City does not experience high levels of crime, its residential population is increasing rapidly, and the restaurants and pubs create an active nightlife.
