CCTV saves Wigan police £90,000

Story link: CCTV saves Wigan police £90,000 by Jan Harris

Wigan’s network of over 550 CCTV cameras, which is one of the most comprehensive systems in the country, is estimated to have helped save approximately £90,000 in police resource time.

Wigan Council’s Civica Public Protection enforcement software has been extended to include local police stations, allowing officers to view CCTV footage by simply logging an electronic request.

Relevant clips can then be attached to incident reports for viewing by other officers and to help provide an evidence log.

This has helped to both prevent and detect crimes, while also reducing the time-consuming paperwork that was previously required to request CCTV footage from the Council. It also eliminates the need to travel to the local police station to pick up the film on DVD.

Wigan Council is also trialling an Authority Public Protection programme as a centralised data resource for its Civil Contingencies Group.

The programme would give all emergency services access to common data in an emergency scenario.
