Scyron launches new DEMON software

Story link: Scyron launches new DEMON software by Jan Harris

Birmingham-based Scyron has launched new DEMON digital evidence management software which has helped West Midlands Police cut the length of the Aston Riots trial by around three weeks and secure 11 convictions.

The trial involved 321 crimes, 2 murders and 5,000 hours of CCTV footage.

Scyron’s DEMON technology allows CCTV and video footage, digital photographs, mobile phone evidence and scanned documents to be viewed, analysed and prepared for presentation as evidence in court.

Carried out manually, this process previously took weeks to complete, but can be done in a matter of hours with the new technology, providing significant cost savings and increased conviction rates.

Superintendent Una Cooke, head of the Major Investigations Unit at West Midlands Police said, “Without this technology it was felt that the case would have lasted at least another three weeks and, also, that it would have been extremely difficult for the jury to be able to follow the evidence against the individual defendants.”

The DEMON software suite is designed so that modules can work either independently or together to provide flexibility.

It features an automated video content analysis module, based on an intelligent algorithm which can automatically identify specific incidents.

This works with a manual review and digital asset management tool which enables multiple officers to simultaneously review an individual piece of video without the risk of duplicating evidence.

The software ensures compliance, as it provides an audit trail of evidence to fulfill the requirements of the DPA, ACPO, Home Office and MoPI.

DEMON evidence management systems are being used by several police forces across the UK, including Derbyshire, Greater Manchester, Northumbria, Warwickshire, and West Mercia, as well as West Midlands Police.
