Axis Communications has announced the AXIS 209FD-R Network Camera, the first network camera designed specifically for use in buses and rail vehicles.
The AXIS 209FD-R is a rugged camera designed to resist the vibrations, dust and high humidity often found in mass transit vehicles. It measures less than 1.6 inches high and provides crisp digital video over an IP network.
As the interior of public transport vehicles often have curved and padded walls and ceilings, the AXIS 209FD-R is customised to remain securely in place on such surfaces. It can be connected to a recording device onboard the vehicle via an Ethernet cable and transmit signals over the Internet using wide-range wireless networks.
The first customer to order the camera was Stockholm Transport, one of the leading bus operators in Europe. The company plans to install five or six cameras in each of its 2,000 buses, starting in early 2007.
The AXIS 209FD-R is equipped with Power over Ethernet (PoE) capability, and uses one Ethernet cable for both power and video, simplifying installation.
The camera uses progressive scan technology to provide sharp images of moving objects and delivers up to 30 frames of video a second (full-motion) in Motion JPEG or MPEG-4 video compression standards. It has a tamper-resistant casing and is able to operate in temperatures between 32º F and 122º F. It operates in humidity levels from 20-100 percent.
The AXIS 209FD-R will be available from January 2007 at a retail price of around $599.
