DIY Video SurveillanceMarket to reach $1 Billion

Story link: DIY Video SurveillanceMarket to reach $1 Billion by Alan Harten

The DIY Video surveillance is driving a new market for security cameras and remote home monitoring systems.

Increasing public awareness is expected to push the market for DIY surveillance cameras to over $1 billion in the next four years.

This represents possible expansion opportunies for broadband operators, semiconductor manufacturers and camera manufacturers, according to MultiMedia Intelligence.

The devices that are pushing sales of security items range from simple doorbell cameras up to reletivly complex remote recording and surveillance devices.

Companies are moving towards DIY kits for surveillance, with cameras and audio equipment for PC recording and remote internet-based monitoring, which allow home and business owners to monitor their premises over the Internet, or even on their mobile phones.

Some new devepmoents seem to be interesting the public in DIY surveillance systems, including new non-profesional Internet-Protocol (IP) surveillance cameras.

Falling equipment costs combine with increased availability of DIY camera equipment, video enabled home PC systems, and Broadband companies looking to expand their market with new services that include monitoring services.

Marketing development company, MultiMedia Intelligence, also believes that Telecom operators think that video surveillance is an opportunity to offer paid ‘value added’ services to clients as a way of increasing their revenue.

These new services could operate along-side, pre-existing security markets offering new opportunites to both ISPs and well established security companies such as ADT or Sonitrol.

DIY IP systems will emphasize no-new-wire installations from companies like 802.11 or Powerline, who will provide the home networking interfaces.

Manufacturers of cameras like Logitech/Wi-Life or D-Link, Samsung and Swann are among the camera makers vying for a piece of this new pie.

The research document produced by MMI entitled “Consumer Do-it-Yourself (DIY) Surveillance: Cameras, Broadband Services & Semiconductors” is an analysis of forecasts into the potential of this market.
