Bosch trials CCTV safety system for cars

Bosch, the German electronics company, is trialling an on-board, intelligent CCTV system for cars, which could significantly improve car safety.
The system uses sensors and ultra-high-performance electronic systems to recognise when a crash is going to occur. It then automatically triggers the car’s safety devices before impact.
This gives pre-crash systems a few extra milliseconds to activate and provide vital protection to the car driver and passengers.
Bosch is currently testing the system with an ‘inflatable car’ - a car-shaped airbag.
Prototype cameras have been fitted to standard saloons. These are crashed into the inflatable car to ensure that the pre-crash systems are triggered correctly.
The so-called ’sensitive’ car could come to market by 2009.
