Portsmouth’s network of 172 CCTV cameras captured over 2,000 incidents between April and June, highlighting the vital role they plan in combating crime and anti-social behaviour.
Around 84 arrests were made as a direct result of the incidents being spotted by CCTV camera operators at the control room in Portsmouth’s civic centre.
The cameras also provide vital evidence to help in the prosecution of those who break the law.
Portsmouth Council’s CCTV manager Ray Stead said: “The camera system has been used to assist enforcement agencies in the solving of murder inquiries, preventing anti-social behaviour and drug trafficking, as well as monitoring traffic and health and safety issues around the city.”
Over an 11-year period, the CCTV cameras have helped to identify over 105,000 incidents.
