US residents’ approval for surveillance cameras to cut crime

There has been a surge of violence in north east Omaha in the USA, that has seen the shooting of 37 people since the beginning of July 2007, of whom two were killed. It has been reported by a local councilman that residents in areas where shootings have become commonplace would accept the installation of more surveillance cameras as long as their privacy is respected.
Feedback to proposals to install more cameras has largely been positive. People are hopeful this will have an effect and are anxious to see how things proceed.
In addition to Sioux City’s surveillance proposal, the mayor wants increased staffing in the police gang unit and changes in city ordinances dealing with minors caught with guns.
More than 50 surveillance cameras used by the Omaha Housing Authority have proved to be effective. Cameras are fitted in all 11 of the authority’s tower blocks and most of the residents are happy with the installation. The authority welcomes comments from residents if they feel they are being victimised by the cameras.
However, there is some opposition to the proposals for extra surveillance, thought by some to be a knee-jerk reaction. It is felt in some quarters that eliminating the source of guns, not adding cameras, is the best solution to the violence.
