Northampton to double CCTV coverage

Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) is planning to nearly double Northampton’s network of 495 CCTV cameras to 727.
The CCTV network resulted in over 12,000 incidents being reported to police in 2007.
WNDC is now implementing a £473,000 scheme to upgrade the video CCTV system to a state-of-the-art digital network. It will also be extended to cover the Brackmills industrial estate which has a high incidence of vehicle crime, including lorry theft.
The new cameras will be added gradually, in line with the expansion of the town, but work on upgrading the system to digital is expected to commence in March. WNDC secured Government funding for the scheme.
Northampton’s existing CCTV system was launched in 1992, when the town was one of the first in Britain to deploy CCTV. Talking CCTV cameras were added last year, in the town centre.
