Chester Council is to vote on whether to further improve its award-winning CCTV system with advanced digital recording technology.

The Council has set aside £120,000 in its budget for the equipment, which stores images onto a hard drive, saving space compared with traditional video cassette storage.

Chester Community Safety Partnership will contribute £30,000 towards the equipment if the Council decides to go ahead with the plans.

The new equipment would provide higher quality images than the existing system and will generate savings of £5,000 per year. Recorded images would be available to operators immediately and the new equipment would also provide a more accurate search facility.

The Council’s CCTV control room was established in Chester Town Hall in July, 2002 after the Home Office provided a grant for a state of the art fibre optic CCTV network.

Chester police station is located in the same building.
