BAE Systems develops smart CCTV

Defence company, BAE Systems, has developed a smart CCTV system which it claims can track a person in the crowd, even if they try to disguise their appearance.
BAE researchers analysed images from a single, standard pan/tilt/zoom camera, from which software produced templates comprising four by four pixel squares.
The template shows as coloured dots around the body of the person to be tracked, and the system follows the target by monitoring the position of the templates.
Initial identification of the subject to be tracked is done by the camera operator.
The operator clicks with a mouse on the image of the person to be tracked. The system then generates the templates to track the subject and automatically follows the selected person.
The software can also be adapted to detect suspicious behaviour such as loitering and alert an operator.
BAE Systems developed the technology as part of a 10-partner EC project on integrated surveillance in crowded areas.
