CCTV drone polices V Festival

Story link: CCTV drone polices V Festival by Jan Harris

Staffordshire Police have used a CCTV drone for the first time - to help patrol the V Festival site at Weston Park on the border of Staffordshire and Shropshire.

The remote control drone, dubbed ‘The Spy In The Sky’, resembles a helicopter. It flew around the site, and was particularly focused on the festival’s car park to catch people trying to break into vehicles.

By Sunday police had arrested a total of 62 people at the festival and cautioned over 100. Thirty-two of those arrested were found to be in possession of drugs.

Police also used Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems to scan car registration numbers on all entry roads to the festival. The number plates can be matched to police databases.

Following the Drone’s success, police expect to use the technology at future big events.
