Hambleton District Council has invested £90,000 to provide a new CCTV system covering Bedale, a town in the Yorkshire Dales.

The system, which covers Bedale High Street and Bridge Street Car Park, has now gone live, increasing the total number of cameras covering the district to 49.

The new cameras complement those already deployed in Northallerton, Thirsk and Stokesley, which have helped the police make over 280 arrests since June 2006.

The existing system has also helped secure convictions, with 367 tapes of incidents used as evidence in court and for interview purposes.

It is hoped that Bedale’s new cameras will help reduce anti-social behaviour, public order offences and boy racers in the area, all of which have been a growing problem for residents.

The new cameras were installed by Baydale Control Systems of Darlington.
