Tayside Police is the first police force in Scotland to trial a cutting edge CCTV system, which could help to gather evidence to assist in the investigation of crime. The footage will also be a high-enough quality to be presented in court.

The lightweight, body-worn cameras, which are designed to be pinned to a policeman’s uniform, either on body armour or a jacket, will be officially launched in June.

During the trial, the digital cameras will take images only, although they are also able to record sound.

Footage recorded by the cameras will be taken back to the police station, where the encrypted images will be downloaded to a stand-along system, and the cameras recharged.

The CCTV cameras were developed by SCS Security Design. The company is now developing software which will beam images from the cameras directly to the CCTV control room in live time.
