Liberty calls for regulations on household CCTV

Human rights organisation, Liberty, is calling for CCTV legislation to be updated to take into account the growing number of cameras being installed by householders in the UK.
With increasing concern over levels of crime, and CCTV technology becoming more readily available and affordable, many householders are installing systems on their own property in an effort to deter vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
Retailer Maplin recorded a 265% increase in its sales of CCTV cameras, monitors and recorders, over the five years to 2008.
Liberty is calling for this rise in CCTV usage to be taken into account in legislation, with particular reference to CCTV systems installed by householders to monitor public places such as parks and pavements.
Liberty, which is also known as the National Council for Civil Liberties, is a cross party, non-party membership organisation, which campaigns for fundamental rights and freedoms in England and Wales.
The organisation promotes the values of individual human dignity, equal treatment and fairness as the foundations of a democratic society.
