The £30m Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT) has been officially opened at Queen’s University in Belfast.
The centre aims to develop technology to combat malicious ‘cyber-attacks’, and to improve the effectiveness of CCTV.
Britain has the highest density of cameras in Europe, with four million of them monitoring its citizens every day.
However, little of the footage is observed at the time it is taken.
The new centre plans to address this by developing hardware and software that can analyse CCTV camera data in real time.
This will enable an immediate response to be launched when a security risk or crime is identified.
The centre will bring together network, data and physical security solutions, with the aim of pioneering their convergence and developing new technologies.
One of the futuristic technologies being developed at the centre is ISIS – Integrated Sensor Information System – which aims to identify suspicious behaviour and prevent crimes occurring.
ISIS will work with CCTV systems already installed in areas such as public transport and street corners.
