Researchers developing noise-responsive CCTV

Story link: Researchers developing noise-responsive CCTV by Jan Harris

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth are developing artificial intelligence CCTV cameras which will respond to noise.

When the cameras ‘hear’ sounds likely to indicate that an incident in taking place, glass breaking or screaming for example, they will turn towards the sound and start recording.

They could also alert a CCTV operator or the police, saving valuable time and helping to secure a conviction.

This is achieved with artificial intelligence software, and directional microphones attached to the cameras.

The University’s research is being funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The system has been demonstrated under laboratory conditions but requires further testing before it is put to use in real life situations.
