CCTV not monitored in York

Story link: CCTV not monitored in York by David Masters

A police chief as stated that he is very disappointed to find that in the city of York, the sophisticated CCTV system is not being monitored around the clock.

This means that despite all of the assurances by local authorities that the streets of cities and large towns are safe, the CCTV is not being monitored, and residents are out under a false sense of security.

The unmonitored times are after 2100 on weekdays and 0100 at weekends, this occurred for nine months up to May 2007, and the reason given was that there was a staffing shortage and recruiting problems.

This is a terrible thing to have happened, especially if there is a group of young women going out believing that they are fairly safe, because there would be someone watching over them, but all the time there was no one behind the lenses of the CCTV systems.

There is no doubt that the presence of CCTV has an effect on the way people go about their normal routines, this would mean that people could take more chances than they would normally and their fore are putting themselves in danger without even knowing it.

York city council, have said that the CCTV was in full operation during the daytime hours, and only the times after 2100 on weekdays and 0100 at weekends, but did work with the police in keeping them informed about the CCTV limitations.

However the problem has now passed and the cities CCTV system are fully manned and fully operational 24/7 or there abouts.
