Most people ignore talking CCTV

Salford Council has revealed that over half of the people admonished for their behaviour by a new ‘talking’ CCTV system, in Eccles, ignored the reprimand.
Between 1 June 2007 and 18 September 2007, CCTV camera operators made 40 announcements over speakers connected to the cameras, reprimanding members of the public for anti-social behaviour such as dropping litter.
Twenty-two of those verbally warned ignored the announcement and because of the minor nature of the offence, the incidents were not followed up by the police. Only 14 people complied with the request from the CCTV operators.
Traders in Eccles have criticised the system and called for further action to stop anti-social behaviour, such as a stronger police presence on the streets.
The cameras were the first talking CCTV cameras to be installed in Greater Manchester.
According to Salford council, the system is having a positive impact and will continue to be used in conjunction with other measures such as fixed penalty notices and Asbos.
