The Minister for Justice, Mr Brian Lenihan, has approved funding of €2.75m for the community-based CCTV Scheme.
The funding will provide grants for CCTV systems to towns across Ireland, in a bid to reduce anti-social behaviour and deter crime.
Sixteen local groups from 12 areas of Ireland will receive capital grants to help them install and operate their own systems under the guidance of local authorities and the Garda.
The grants will go to groups from Dublin’s north-west inner city; Drogheda; Dundalk; Ennis; Kilkenny; Kileely/Thomondgate, Limerick; Longford town; Manorhamilton town, Co Leitrim; Mullaghmatt, Co Monaghan; Thurles, Co Tipperary; and Tralee, Co Kerry.
Four groups, from Athboy, Co Meath; the Moatview/Darndale area of Dublin; Ballymahon, Co Longford; and Tymon Bawn in Tallaght, will benefit from €19,400 predevelopment funding.
This will help the groups develop initial proposals for CCTV capital grants.
