Yes - no need for a PC at the monitored sites.
Just use a router to connect your DVR to the internet / broadband connection. Good that you've got a fixed IP address at site - this means that wherever you are in the world you always know the IP address where your site and DVR can be found. BT used to charge extra for this (provision and monthly), not sure if they still do? I generally recommend PlusNet for these applications because their fixed IP addresses have always been free and their service good. You'll need to configure the firewall rulles and port forwarding in the router to allow you to hit the designated IP address and be routed directly to the DVR. The exact requirements will vary according to what router and what DVR. You will probably want to set up passwords on the DVR to stop just anybody stumbling across and accessing it.

Hi Sparkies,
Assuming that the laptop is able to see the internet when connected to the router, then the laptop configuration should be a good base to start from. There are a few things to check which may help you on the way to fixing the problem. When you go into the DVR settings..have you setup the "Gateway" IP address? This tells the DVR unit which IP address to use when trying to get out onto the network/internet To begin, connect your laptop to the router, and ensure that you can see the internet, then open up the dos prompt (cmd.exe) type in the following: ipconfig /all This will list the various IP addresses, gateways and subnet masks in use on the laptop. Make sure that the DVR uses the same subnet values (normally 255.255.255.0) Then also make sure that the DVR has the same gateway IP address as your laptop (normally the gateway is the IP address of the router itself which usually is 192.168.1.254) And finally assign a static IP address to the DVR unit using a similar IP to the laptop, just changing the last number xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Example. Laptop IP configuration: IP Address: 192.168.1.3 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway:192.168.1.254 Using the above as an example, the DVR would be setup in the following way: (only the IP address should be different) DVR IP configuration: IP Address: 192.168.1.40 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway:192.168.1.254 By doing this, you should at least be able to ping the IP address of the DVR from your laptop and you should also be able to type the DVR's IP address into your web browser and see the DVR's web server page from the laptop/PC. If you can get this far then you would be ready to begin port forwarding and allow external access through the internet not just the local network. When using Vista there are a few more things to look out for regarding security and activeX which can cause issues, but I can get into those in a bit once you have tried the above.. Hope it helps in some way.. Best regards, Khye Hickey Eirsec.ie Last edited by khye; 10-25-2008 at 02:33 PM. |

How did you get on with the configuration? - Did you receive the results you were hoping for?
