My babysitter had some change in her ashtray - someone broke the window just to steal it. Sadly it was not a lot of change, but disturbing to think that people will actually break a window to take some loose change when they could get more by begging on the corners. (Not that I am encouraging that either)

On my block in NYC, I once watched two kids under ten years old break into three cars and steal things before any of us could chase them or call the police. AT the end of the block, they were picked up by an adult in a car. It was maddening!!!!! If we'd tackled them, we probably would have been charged with harming a minor.

It is frustrating to see crime happening and not be able to take swift action with some sort of repercussion. Fortunately for me, when I chased the kids who tried to steal my car a few weeks ago I was smart enough to not do anything to them and just see where they went so I could tell the police when I called and reported it.

I think some of us would have tackled those kids and caught them, but with laws the way they are now, we would have been the ones who ended up in jail not the kids! That part of our law sucks. The parents of the kids are smart ...the kids won't get much time at all even if they are caught. Of course, it's child abuse on their part!

I understand that car thieves often go for cars you'd never expect. Besides they could of just been playing around with it for the fun of. |

I agree, Vicki - the law is often far too interested in protecting the rights of criminals, rather than the victims of their crimes. It's pretty sick, really, that human rights don't seem to become so much of an issue with the law until someone stands to have their rights curbed by the state, as opposed to the actions of individuals vs individuals.

Somebody broke into my vehicle not long ago and took two things - my cell phone and an unopened pack of chewing gum. Both were in the glove compartment.
They got more use out of the chewing gum. I called my provider, who quickly checked the usage and found one outbound call in the wee hours that morning, then promptly suspended the service. I had a replacement phone in two days. Fortunately, they did not mess up the locks on the doors, which was a small miracle. |
