Lat week I was about to go to the shop with the kids. I was just getting them into the car when I noticed that something about the car just didn't look quite right, bt I couldn't figure what.
When I finally went around to the other side of the car I found that someone - durnig the night - had apparently tride to prise the car door off from the roof. So the car door was bent clear away from the car - I'm impressed the glass in the window didn't crack or break. Anyway, I called the local police number just to report it, and was able to bend the car door back - eventually. What got me, though, is that there is nothing ni the car to steal anyway - and it was the front passenger door they prised, rather than the driver's side, so it didn't seem like they were after stealing the car either. Overall, a completely pointless act of criminal damage that I'm sure no one will ever be prosecuted for. Thanks goodness I didn;t have to pay out to fix it - though the window on the front passaenger side doesn't open properly anymore. |

I once had a pair of RayBan Aviator sunglasses and some spare change stolen from my car. I remember wondering whether I had left the car unlocked or whether someone had managed to unlock it. Either way, this was before car alarms were standard (I was using The Club to keep the car from being easily stolen), so I figured there wasn't much I could do any differently so I didn't even bother reporting it.

I've had a car(honda civic) and 3 motorcycles stolen. I live just outside of Philly. It's a horrible feeling and now I basically have to drive junky cars so they wont get stolen.

The big problem with car crime is how unseriously its taken - a car is likely to be the biggest single investment for most households, after their home itself. However, despite this, the government and police treat car crime as an annoyance, rather than with the seriousness I think it deserves. IT's just law-abiding tax-paying citizens who get punished in dealing with car crime, rather than the criminals themselves.

I've had hubcaps taken from my former Chrysler LeBaron convertible on more than one occasion. There's not much you can do to prevent stolen hubcaps is there?

i had someone try and break into my car by jamming a screwdriver into the lock on the passenger door. they had actually managed to unlock the door but must have been disturbed as nothing was stolen.

Of course, there's the big lesson that you never leave bags or other items visible inside your car - just asking for a break-in. Unfortunately, as above, there are some nut cases out there who don't need any excuse.

It is sad that people break into cars, especially when there is nothing worth stealing except maybe the car. I have had my car stolen once and broken into a few times in the neighborhood I live in. The last attempt/break in was just a few weeks ago.
I was coming into the livingroom from the back of the house when I noticed someone's hat at the driver's side door of my car. I was not sure what was going on, so I opened the front door. That is when I saw a person in the back seat and a person in the driver's seat (in addition to the one still standing at the door). I ran out the door and chased the three people down the street and around the block. It turned out to be three teen aged boys from the next street over trying to steal my car in the middle of the afternoon. I did call 911 and report the attempt as soon as I returned home - one biy was arrested, and he in turn snitched on the other two who now have warrants out for their arrest. Sadly I think these are the same kids who have been breaking into and stealing my car for a couple of years now....I am looking to move, or get a hand gun.... It is a terrible violation of our privacy and our possessions - but those who seek out to break into people's cars, or steal them seem to have no concern about the lives they impact when they do that. They only thing we can do is to take precautions to ensure it won't happen again. I leave my doors unlocked (so I do not have to spend another $150 on a window) and pull a fuse out of my car before I go in every night. If they get in my car, they won't get far...the car wont' start and they won't be able to break the window....not much else I can do unless I move to another neighborhood, and even then there is still a chance my car could get stolen. |
