Hi, i thought id start a thread on a product we used a long time ago when we installed " Taxi Cams " i know there is a thread in "Introductions" so i thought i'd explain what we used instead of a 12v Digital Recorder, We used a 240v Dvr coupled with a "power inverter" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
![]() What this little devise does is convert 12v upto 240v, then you can use any recorder you want.

Inverter is OK, and good for circumventing the scum that triple prices for 12 volt mobile (particularly Taxis) ...but very demanding on battery...Great while driving and engine running, but at standstill most will cut out when a critical voltage is reached so with engine idle, say overnight the DVR will most probably turn off; probably just as some scrota has smashed a side window and is about to show his pretty face...
I like to leave vehicle DVR running at night, turning the cameras outside I can have a good view of house front to supplement household CCTV. After a nights work the battery is just about up to this and giving me a healthy start in the morning. I had thought about a second battery on a split charge relay but do not want to go down that route unless I have to. |

Perhaps you have all the answers you need then, and maybe a second battery with a split charge would be your best option, maybe you could tow that behind you :-) , or put it on the back seat and ask your fair's to get in a trailer!! I'm assuming with you recording in your cab you are complying with all the data protection legislation?
"Conclusion" if you want to do the job properly spend some hard earned cash and a good quality dvr, a secondary battery with split charge and relay, and away you go!!

You seem to have taken offence at my posting, or the fact I am a Taxi driver...there was no offence intended...but good luck with your business. |

Hey,
I recently fitted and taxi firm in Edinburgh out where I used an Motor home Leisure battery and used an power thing (sorry can't remember name) and where they battery was the most cheapest thing I fitted, but issue is unless your an sparky Your not meant to do it as the New laws in place, But it was simple and the Battery powered The DVR and Cameras were powered by solar panels fitted to roof. Now i know it works i learn for future on how to do it. But issue was This firm i did it for was one the big taxi guys, I most susspect Archbishop is an Small Taxi firm which does not make much profit. and they is peice kit out for like £500 which police use and Well recomend and that simple Plug and Play system. |

Archbishops a smallun all right, one Taxi, one driver for the past 20 years...Wife kids and grandchildren pulling at the profits for the last 30 years
![]() New laws? I am not fully up to speed in all of this yet, was going to ask Ian but did not want another chunk out of my ear No doubt I shall be sure its all belt and braces when I finally find some time before going live. "Power thing"...would that be an inverter or protected 12v? I like the sound of the solar panel...would not last long here on the taxi roof with the yobbos. Thanks for advice my mate! |

To response of Solar Panels, it would depend how and where they are fitted, on taxis i tend to fit them onto roof and link the taxi sign to use an small amount of panel, I have now fitted these on over 40 of Lothian and Border Police vehicles and some of these are the Community Support Vehicles which on day basic have stuff thrown at them, And even myself with the correct equipment to remove them have trouble with it,
and Regarding law best person would be your lawer but if you want give me an buzz on 0131 208 4549 where I can help you on mild law and any other tech queries. Regarding the law issue. To my current understanding and my experience of CCTV laws unless your taxis in run my council, person who will review the cctv will need to be SIA qualified Which cost anything for CCTV from £50-£500 also you legally must install Signs with following information in UK: CCTV in Opration Images are being recored for the purpose of crime prevention and public safety Please contact: (Insert number and name) for futher information about this scheme. This scheme is controlled by: (Your Company name or SIA qualifed reviewer). Again got any questions call our office on 0131 208 4549 were wee team and don't bite, and hope this helps Kind Regards Chris |
