I am due to install my PTZ camera to the front of my house for the protection of my property and to look after the welfare of my family.
The camera will also have the ability to look at my neighbours property and into the street. How do I stand legally with this if it were to happen ? Im sure the neighbours wont mind the added protection if it were to infringe onto their property but how do I stand legally ? What if i were to catch someone breaking th law in the street or some little herbert breaking into my neighburs house ? What do I need to do to stay legal and what actions could I take as to not get sued for infringment of privacy ? Do i need to follow some sort of CCTV rule as I cant see any real commitment needed to follow the Data protection act as im not a buisness, or is there a requirement ??? All help and advice would be much appreciated ... |

With most good quality PTZ camers there will be a curtain (Smoke screen) that you can edit out so that you dont have to look at a public place, If you are caught veiwing public area's without permission you will certainly be asked some questions...

The fact that the camera can view the street has no relevance in Law. The Data Protection Act does not apply for residential use of CCTV. The fact that it may see areas on your neighbour's property should not cause concerns either, as just as long as it can be shown (in the event of a compliant) that the camera predominately is used to look at your property. Hope this helps Ilkie |
