Would have thought it's fine, you have CCTV monitors in shops that everybody can see...

Technically in breach of the DPA as you have uncontrolled viewing of personal data.

Also not good from the securty perspective as you allowing possible blind spots in the CCTV system to be seen.

Yes, that's a good point Ilk, you don't really want any would be perpetrators noticing any possible blind spots in your system.

On the other point, I can't remember the last time I walked into a Tescos and didn't see myself and other shoppers on a security monitor.

Sure, but the Tesco's camera will typically show you in front of the monitor that you are watching (if you get my drift), so the images you see are only all around you.

You should not see someone in another part of the store.

Quote from the DPA

Quote:

Viewing of live images on monitors should usually be restricted to the operator unless the monitor displays a scene which is also in plain sight from the monitor location.

Example:
Customers in a bank can see themselves on a monitor screen. This is acceptable as they cannot see anything on the screen which they could not see by looking around them. The only customers who can see the monitor are those who are also shown on it.

Example:

Monitors in a hotel reception area show guests in the corridors and lifts,
i.e. out of sight of the reception area. They should be turned so that they are only visible to staff, and members of the public should not be allowed access to the area where staff can view them.

You need to address this situation as it is at best bad security practise for a Control Room and at worst a breach of Data Protection, I suggest using one way film or some kind of physical housings or monitor brackets to solve the problem.
