dvr over a network

Hi i have a 4 channel dvr that i want to connect over my wireless network to view images on my pc , but i am finding the instructio9ns very confusing as regards ip address i am running win xp and have a belkin wireless n1 router , i have managed to connect dvr via computer and can view images but when i connect to the router the pc cannot connect to it
what am i doing wrong

has anyone got an idiots guide to networking a dvr
does one even exist
i believe i have a static ip as guide suggests but i think i am using wrong ip or putting it in wrong place

help anyone ?
