I think the stats support it. We don't have one where we live, just the informal one which works quite well. I'll ask the local co-ordinator (the actual police co-ordinator who helps set the schemes up, as I happen to know her) what the stats actually say and post it here.

She did not have the figures to hand, but had a survey they actually did of convicted burglars....

They generally said that they do not like neighbourhood watch areas, and if possible will move on to a non-NW area nearby. - I don't suppose it applies to every last one of them because they are not famed for their rational decision making usually (especially since most are druggies) - after all, if they were any good, they'd not have been in prison to take the survey!

Incidentally, they also rated the biggest single deterrent an individual house could have is a dog!

So presumably a dog with a neighbourhood watch sticker on it is the ideal....

Dogs do work, even if they aren't your stereotypical guard type dogs. Even a noisy pair of Yorkies will put people off. Even burglars don't like their ankles nipped lol.

My next door neighbours have two irritatingly noisey dogs. A guess there is some benefit to their noise then!

Great to hear, and thanks for posting it here.

Speaking of which, my neighbour has a "Beware of the dog" sign on their back garden gate. They don't have a dog, though.

We have a neighborhood watch program in our neighborhood. The lady down the street is in charge of it. We joined and put signs in our window and get a newsletter about every three months. It seems to work. We haven't experienced any problems in our neighborhood. I think the signs may help deter people as they may think they are being watched and think twice about doing anything.

Hi, there are some free starter guides at this website and I had downloaded them some weeks back to give to my brother that moved to a new town. If you would like to download them, here is the link.

Neighbourhood watch can work well, it gives the police important information on whats happening ie if people let them know which groups of kids say are hanging around etc.

If everyone gets involved then neighbourhood watch works well. It depends on how much people gets them involved.

We don't have one where I live. But I would have to agree I would think the signs might be somewhat of a deterrent. We tend to just watch out for each other in our neighborhood.
