How do you protect your home?
I've got double glazing, window locks, deadlocks on doors, but aside from that, nothing. Generally, we live in a reasonable safe and secure area - new building development on the outskirts of a very small village - but I'm always open to options to help make our home more secure. |

My father uses ridged door restraints like those in the images below. I found some examples at: http://www.c-p-p.co.uk/_door_securit...32/af/page.htm
These have worked well for him, and I have to admit that they feel safer than a chain. For patio doors, these types of locks work well as additional securiy: ![]() http://www.metrolocks.co.uk/lock-pro...atio-doors.asp Some men tried to crowbar my fathers patio door open, apparently the tactic worked on other houses in the street, but it wouldn't budge because my father had installed something like this (top and bottom). The burglars just gave up. For windows, he has restraining bolts which only allow them to open so far but I cannot for the life of me think what they are called, I'll ask him next time I see him. I hope this information is of help. |

We have a hard wired alarm throughout the house. Anywhere we can't put it on the door or window, we have motion detectors. Burglars don't like alarms so just the presence of them is a deterent.

Your lucky LyricB. I'm living in Malaysia, every door, window, balcony has a metal grill in front of it or behind it. We can open the windows, doors to let the breeze in but the metal grills have to stay shut at all times (at least when there aren't a couple of decent sized guys on hand). I think it's because there is such a wide gap between the poor and the rich in this country that desperate individuals will try anything to rob you. They would come in and slaughter your whole family just for 500 Ringit (US$142). Of course such cases are rare but they do happen more frequently than in western nations.

I've recently put some bolts on my door, but I live inside a flat complex so it's pretty hard for anyone from outside to gain access. I also have a dog, which is incredibly helpful! Any noises or strange goings-on and he knows immediately.
