I have been mugged and it was one time I glad I smoked! I was walking along a city street on my way home from work and lit a cigarette. I remember thinking that my mother would highly disapprove of me walking along smoking on the street. About that time, I was grabbed from behind.
I don't know what made me do it, but I reached back with my cigarette. It happened to get the mugger in the eye and he collapsed in agony on the sidewalk. Some passerbys grabbed him and held him until the police came. I was lucky I smoked. |

I'd more forgotten about it, but yes about 8 years ago.
It was late one evening (about 10pm), so I shouldn't have really been walking alone, but I was walking past some tower block apartments. There was virtually no one around and this young boy came up to me with what appeared to be a knife and asked for my bag. Fortunately for me there was no money in bag and I actually got it back the next day - intake, except for an old walkman. |

YOu remember it for a long time ...there's that sense of violation that just doesn't go away easily. I had a burglary once, and I have to say that it may have been worse than the mugging. The mugging was over and I was safe, but when someone has been in your home, the feeling takes much longer to go away.

Once walking home drunk from a nightclub, I was suddenly jumped from behind by two youths, punched and kicked to the ground, where they demanded my wallet.
Simply dazed, I simply replied "there's f*** all in it" so they grabbed the watch from my outstretched arm and ran off with a threat not to follow them. It was over pretty quick and I wasn't really hurt. What really stood out at the time is that I could really feel how scared they were. And the incredibly ironic thing is that I was trying to write a novel at the time, and I had writers block - one of the main characters was to be mugged, but I had no idea how to write the scene. I might prefer a different source for inspiration next time. ![]() |

Belson ...it's one reason there's no way around indepth research when writing ...too often writers think they can wing their way through something, but it really shows in the end that they have no idea what they're talking about ...hence less impact.
