Default Wired vs wireless

I figure that when it comes to choosing a security system, one of the big options is whether to use a wireless option of have lots of cameras set up together with wires.

However, I can see drwbacks with both options. On the one hand, wireless systems make maintenance easier in terms of not having lots of wires dangling everywhere, especially when they can be more prone to wear or even damage such as from mice and other rodents.

But, I hear that wireless technology can have problems with obstructions such as walls and outbiuldings, plus the range of wireless systems can be quite limited. All leading to the point that such systems offer limited quality unless at short range.

I've mentioned problems with wired systems, but isn't going to be the case that when covering a large area, a wired system isn't going to be harder to maintain and that the wires ensure a better picture quality on your monitoring station?

I suspect it is a cost factor for many people as I assume, and please correct me if I'm wrong, that wireles is ultimately much less expensive to install.

Wireless shouldn't be an issue for external security - I think you mentioned in your other threads that you were particularly keen to use surveillance on a car park. In which case, I can see no immediate issue with using a wireless system, providing the car park isn't huge - but even then, base stations at strategic points is porbably going to be more effective, reliable, and easier to maintain - than a wired system.

Just my 2c, though.

Would the use of wireless cameras expose your security to being tapped?

Ah - good point - definitely worth checking on encryption options for the wireless signal.

Generally wireless cameras are not encrypted for those of us who have gotten the cheap ones. Anyone with a receiver can pick up your signal in the short range.

Having said this, I don't see that it is a problem for external cameras. What if someone did intercept the signal? They would only be viewing through your camera outside. Technically a neighbour could use your system to extend their viewing area. If, however, you have one set up in your bedroom you could theoretically create an embarrassing situation for yourself.
