Got to admit I was originally for the rambling changes - the big problem really is that so much of the countryside became closed off from public use.
It wasn't a case of private home owners stopping trespassing - it was simply a case of big companies, such as utilities, closing off land and threatening prosecution for trespassing, simply because they owned the land. Nothing to damage, and often small pockets of countryside used for generations to play in by locals and out-of-towners being fenced off for no good reason. Sounds like the pendulum has maybe swung a bit too far in correction, though. |

Yes, I think that's what has happened. For instance, we have a stone circle on the estate which we aren't mowing around this year as we have in past years ...simply because, it keeps down the number of people who try to find it. I wish it weren't that way, but too many times, there are people roaming around in an area where gates aren't closed and livestock is not considered.

I think governments too often succumb to special interest groups too quickly without really thinking through the consequences for everyone.
I had to laugh yesterday when there was an article in the papers here about an annual summer fund raising event in Lyme Regis. For years, they've done a silly thing where you pay money and you get to slap someone around with a dead conger eel. Well, the animal rights activists decided that it was being disrespectful to dead eels and made such a ruckus that the whole idea was tossed out rather than fight them. A dead eel? Come on! |
