Bittorrents?

How safe are torrent sites to use? I was thinking of downloading some reference books i saw on a torrent site but i dont know if they will transfer a virus or not. Will my virus scanner know to scan the stuff that is coming in on the torrent?

Personally I won't touch file sharing - and that includes torrents - because the dangers of infection are pretty acute. And with using a business computer, the last thing I want is my business info being tapped by a hacker!

What file types are we talking about? I would definitely be very shy of any .exe files that I downloaded.
