I was rereading the thread thinking that just about anyone who is posting here probably is heads up enough to have the common sense to know when to stay aware. It's the younger kids who I see with a complete 'doh' going on that get into trouble. The other night in a mall parking lot, I saw a teenager put her handbag on the back of the car while she loaded things into the back seat. There was a guy walking by who kept looking at the bag. I yelled out 'hello' to her which jolted him. She looked at me like I was an idiot but I swear it probably saved her back from being taken. Doh!

Vicki, you are probably right on the money. Folks need to learn that there are idiots out there who will take whatever they can whenever they can. Why she did not put her handbag is the car first so it was out of sight is beyond me. You would think that would be common sense and not require any real thought at all, but as your example points out, sometimes people do not think at all. Hopefully, the young lady will think the situation through and not have to actually have her purse grabbed before she wises up.

Most people just seem to think it won't happen to them. People think I am crazy when I lock my car doors just to run into the store for a few minutes. But it only takes a second for someone to jump into the back seat and wait for you. I would rather be safe than sorry

I know the feeling. Where I live, it's very rural with an extremely low crime rate. I can leave the car running and pop into a shop here. Whenever I go to one of the larger towns around, I lock up etc.and always remind myself to do so.

You are doing the right thing. It is always advisable to do everything to remain safe.

There is nothing crazy about locking your car doors, even if you are going to run into the post office or a store for no more than a minute or two. I do the same thing. These days, it should be second nature, and not even anything that people debate.

You can never be too safe I feel. I try to get my daughters to realize that. I have one that I think is way too trusting. I really worry about her and try to tell her you can't be that way nowadays. It's really hard to convince her of that though.

It is wonderful that your daughter wants to think the best of people, but I agree that even if your predilection is to take someone at face value, you have to keep in the back of your mind that this person may have other motives that are not yet apparent. This is not just in the realm of personal saftery; you have to make that consideration in business deals as well as dating someone. It is one thing to be courteous to a stranger; it is quite another to assume the stranger has your best interests at heart.

Yes, and that's a sad state of life; I'd like being courteous to strangers, but when they ask to go toward a darker undetected place, you just know that the trust wasn't placed on the right place
