Has anyone ever takin Karate or something along those lines? I think this would be a great idea to learn something like this, if only for self defense. I recently joined our local YMCA and they are offering classes on Karate. I am seriously thinking about signing up.

I took Tae Kwon Do. I loved it. A back injury forced me to stop. It is similar to karate only Tae Kwon Do is more kick-based and karate more upper body. Martial arts are great for kids, too. It teaches self-discipline, an appreciation for one's body, self confidence and if necessary, safety.

Well I signed up our two boys at the Y yesterday and they have there first class tomorrow. I am still debating on if I will sign up for a class yet. I am leaning more towards signing up. I just think it would give me more confidence in myself and I would be better able to protect myself.

I never took this lesson but we were taught Taekwondo basic, but that was when I was a teenager. I already forgot everything. My husband has a belt in Karate, and they were also taught another Martial Arts thing when he was in the Marine.

I took a martial art (can't remember which one :O) a little while ago, but didn't continue on with it for that long.
I know several people who do take one, though, so it is a good skill to have. |

I've taken Tae Kwon Do. Personally, I don't consider it more than a sport. If I was mugged, I would surrender my stuff, it's just not worth it. If I was attacked, I'd just go for the softest bits!

My 9 yr old grandson is taking tae kwon do and he really likes it. It really is good for teaching self discipine. I go and watch him and they teach him different things they can do to protect themselves from strangers depending on if they come from behind or in front of you.
