The only way I would think a cell phone might make a would be attacker change their mind is if they are afraid the person on the other end will call the police and possibly they will know where you are calling from.

The other day I was reading the experience of a woman who was being followed by few unwanted elements. She was alone but had her mobile with her. Fortunately for her she was near to her home and she just made a call to her husband who came immediately outside to check the situation. So in these kind of situations mobiles are a friend in need.

I was thinking along the lines of some others that someone might think twice before attacking you if you were on your phone. It would be more likely you could call 911 or that the person who you were on the phone with could get you help.

The only problem with mobile phone is that they are most of the times the reason why people get mugged here at our town. There are new types of phones that are a bit more expensive in the market nowadays, and these are the things most thieves go for even.

One other thing to consider...muggers look for people who make good targets because they seem vulnerable in some way. And not paying attention to your environment is a huge source of vulnerability. If you're on a cell phone chatting with a pal about last night's big date, you may never see the mugger until he makes his move.
For that reason, I say carry a cell phone on you for safety by all means, but don't keep your ear glued to the phone when you're walking in an unfamiliar place. Keep your head up, walk with purpose (even if you're lost), and immediately change direction or head for a public place if someone seems to be paying too much attention to you. |
