I think the deterrent factor comes into play in that if you are on a cell phone and get mugged, the person on the other end can report it immediately.
Conversely, I can see where someone focused on a cell phone conversation could be grabbed and robbed before they had a chance to notice someone was about to attack them. I'm not really sure there is any real advantage to a cell phone as being a deterrent. |

I would agree that they are great to have in an emergency. But to be honest I don't think it deters someone who has the intent to rob you. It might but I just don't think they are thinking about someone else on the other end being able to hear what is going on.
