Default mobile phones?

I think it's great to have your mobile phone with you at all times but I see many people say they pretend to be on a mobile to put off attackers and other people who say this can attract them. What do you think?

I think the days are over when mobile phones made you a crime target. Phones are cheap. Maybe if it was a Blackberry or some other expensive phone, it would be a different story.

I think if someone has you as a target, they will come after you regardless of what you are doing they will just wait till the right moment and attack you when you least expect it.

As said above, the average cellphone per people has raised so much in the last few years, that you're probably more likely to find someone with a cellphone than without.

Yup, I would guess most attackers have their own cell phones, maybe just not on them at the time. I've never heard of the cell phone as a deterrent before. That's a good idea.

I think the deterrent factor comes into play in that if you are on a cell phone and get mugged, the person on the other end can report it immediately.

Conversely, I can see where someone focused on a cell phone conversation could be grabbed and robbed before they had a chance to notice someone was about to attack them.

I'm not really sure there is any real advantage to a cell phone as being a deterrent.

Quite true, if your car runs out of the gas in the middle of nowhere at night, a cellphone is quite a good friend.

I would agree that they are great to have in an emergency. But to be honest I don't think it deters someone who has the intent to rob you. It might but I just don't think they are thinking about someone else on the other end being able to hear what is going on.
