Default Virus on E-mails?

I find this funny, when my mom told me that if I email my cousin I need to put my name in the subject. She gave me my cousin's email account under yahoo.com. I asked my mom, "Why do I need to do all that" and she told me that my cousin told her that her computer was messed up when she open up an e-mail with a virus in it. And I was thinking is my cousin a dummy or what? I have a yahoo e-mail account, one time I received an e-mail from a company I thought I knew about, when I opened the e-mail Yahoo had a warning saying "File contains a virus do you want to continue downloading?"
Did this ever occured, Like you open your mail and the mail has virus in it and will immediately mess your pc. I just find it hard to believe unless if you download something that has virus in it.

Email viruses are very common today. The only way to get rid of this is never open any attachments that are sent by an unknown sender. Simply delete it from the inbox.

Yes if you do not know who is sending you an email it is better not to open and it to certainly not open any attachments.
