Default drunk driving

I just read about ignition interlocks, I never knew what they were but apparently they are used to stop drinkers from driving. Great plan!

The main reason people continue to drive drunk today is because they can and because we let them,” MADD president Glynn Birch said at a Washington news conference. “MADD believes, and 65 percent of America agrees with us, that first-time offenders need and deserve an alcohol ignition interlock.””
The interlocks require a driver to blow into the device which only allows the car to start if it does not detect alcohol.

I think anything that will help the rest of us be safe from drunk drivers is a win win situation.

I agree. Personally, I do not get behind the wheel if I have had anything to drink. Either someone else drinks, or I take a cab, or I stay put.

What I don't get is why they don't seem to use these more often? From my understanding some places already use similiar things or at least have the capability to use them. But they must not use them a lot or you wouldn't see all the habatial offenders. I think they are a great idea.

65% of the population is quite low... I would have accepted much more, I wonder what the argument for the remaining 35% is...

To be honest I do not hink it would be a bad idea to have these installed in all makes and models as a standard feature, like seat belts, seat belts are manditory to save lives and this feature would do the same thing save lives!

I think this is a great idea but wish they were being installed in more cars. Hopefully they will eventually be as common as the seatbelt. We really need to do something to protect ourselves and families from the people who drink and drive.

Well as time goes by and old models die to make place to newer models, it may take about 20 years or so :\
