I thought the exact same thing Slashmire when I seen this. I would never think or want to decorate or paint over my smoke detector. The painting over to me for sure just takes commen sense that you shouldn't do that.

That and who's going to be looking that high, anyway? I had some repair work done on my ceiling that required a decent sized opening be cut in it. The hole was there for several weeks and not one visitor noticed it.
Papia, just curious about what experiences you'd had that you wanted to be sure this information was shared? |

I was shopping today and was looking for a CO detector and I happened to look at the smoke detectors and I had to laugh. They actually had a light greenish colored one. First time I have ever seen that but I thought of this post when I seen it.

Smoke detectors are inexpensive and in my opinion they are not to be laughed at. You absolutely should have these in your home or apartment.
Test them often and replace the batteries, dont forget! My friend, living in subsidized housing, was due for inspection. They replaced all the batteries in the detectors as they had been removed because of being annoyed by the beeps (NEVER do that!) .. the young child set fire to a waste basket and the alarm went off after detecting the smoke and the room where the fire was had the door closed. This fire could have escalated without much notice if it would not have been for the fire alarm. sheesh! |

Smoke alarms are one consumer area that make me furious. The designs are so much the same as they've been for years with little innovation to be seen. The batteries are hard to get in and get the things working again, the covers are difficult to get back on and that damned chirping!
There's got to be a better way! |

From spieler45's reply, I remembered that we had the same problem in our office last month. When the manufacturer came for a test of their product they found many of the alarms not working at all. After about half an hour of different methods finally someone suggested to check for the batteries. It was the batteries indeed which went dead.
