Very good suggestions. Another thing I have always heard if you have a baby don't put all the signs in the yard because then it lets people know that the house might be empty because you are in the hospital. Never really thought about that until I read this somewhere.

This is a good suggestion. Contrary to majority of people's belief that letting everyone know about your vacation plan helps, I will say it can increase the level of danger. So it is better to keep the plan secret.

I think it all depends on where you live ...whether it's rural or urban. Rurally, it pays to let people know you're away as neighbors keep an eye out for lights on, movement, etc. In an urban area, there's no way I'd broadcast my plans.

I think it's ok to let a close neighbor know that you are going on vacation. That way they can look out for you while you're gone. We do that with our neighbors. They watch out for us and we watch out for them. Even if it's just for a few days.

Yes I think you might want to ask a family member to check in on things for you. If they are not able to do so then ask one of your neighbors that you trust the most. This should help to keep too many people from realizing you are not home.

If you'll be leaving home as a family, I think it is best to have other family like cousins or siblings to check on your house once in a while. And in your part; as the very first post said, don't tell anyone who doesn't need to know that you'll be leaving.
