Another thing that works well is to leave some lights on in different areas of your house whether you are home or not. If it looks like a busy household a burglar is less likely to break in. Who would want to deal with a house full of people?
The beware of dog sign is a great tip Papia! |

Can you still get those recordings of dogs barking. I remember years ago someone I knew had one queued up so that if someone stepped on the front porch the recording would begin to play, low at first then gradually louder as if the dog were getting closer to the door.

Having lights on and "Beware of Dog" sign do work for small time operators. But we have to keep in mind that these are old tricks and are now known to everyone. Utlimately it's your lock on which you have to depend.

Although I do like the idea of the sign, I always make sure my doors and windows are locked. There are people today who aren't even bothered by the signs. Some don't even care that the lights are on. Keeping doors locked I think is the best thing to do.

Wouldn't it be cool to be able to rig a spotlight that would go on should a burglar break in, and then have a taped message cursing him or her out? There might be enough shock value to slow the burglar down just long enough for the police to get there.
