Time is very important when you are faced with an unfriendly situation where you feel you are are a risk. Once I read that at this point you will be immensely benefited if you can buy extra time. Engage the person in a conversation and try to find ways to go to a safer location or draw attention of others.

This is true. Attempting to buy a little time by asking questions may buy enough time for another person to get within visual and audial range, which may be just enough to scare off the attacker. Or failing that, edging around to a place where you might be able to flee while distracting the attacker in some manner may also be the ticket.

Yes if you have the ability to get more time so maybe you can figure out something to do to help you then that is good...however sometimes you are not able to have that opportunity. Remember though if you are somewhere that it will benefit you ..your voice is your best weapon.

I think depending on being able to talk your way out of something is a risky way of looking at it. Sure, it can work in the odd circumstance, but I also think you should be thinking of other ways to protect yourself ....like where is the attacker's groin, what do you have as a weapon?

There will never be a one size fits all solution. As pointed out, if you are grabbed from behind, chances are you will not have much of a chance to chatter on and distract the attacker. Other times, you will have that option. Taking inventory of what you can do in a given situation is what you must do. if you can place a strategic knee in the groin, slap the female attacker across the chest, or in some way disable attackers of either gender so you can make a run for it, then do so.

Well in case of a sudden physical attack it is almost impossible to buy time. At that point you have to find way to defend yourself first. But in many cases we can come out of the situation by trying something innovative.

You're right. The man who attacked me from behind got a cigarette in his eye. I was walking along smoking a cigaretter when he grabbed me and instinct jabbed the lit cigarette over my shoulder at him. Happened to catch him right in the eye. He doubled over and a couple of people who saw what happened grabbed him.

That was quick reaction and seemed to work. I know if it's not a secluded place they are teaching the kids to use their voices and also self defense. They tell them to yell as loud as they can.."stranger stranger ...get away from me" then they show them some defense moves they can also use to get away.
